Could it be just a fancy spelling of the name "Gail"? I've seen "Gail" spelled "Gayle" and "Gale".

no, i know it is strictly a girlsname and a name on it's own.
I've now recently heard it's a Celtic name, but I'm not sure of that. Does anyone know?

There is a Breton girl's name Gaelle. No books to hand at the moment but I think it just means Gael (as in Irish person).
