I've got a challenge for you!
I am the product of a family of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh folk (who've been here in America for a hundred years or so, so we aren't talking about a name fresh from the old country). My full name is Margaret Colleen Clare, but I am called Mageen. (Female, if that was in question!) I am curious: Has anyone heard my name before? The Mageen part of it? I would be very interested in any details about it. I tried to submit it, as so far, I am the only one I know of, but am having no luck on that point (server problem or something, I dunno). Either way, has anyone ever heard of my name?

Dear Margaret,
I was just researching our surname and came across your site. I am pleased to tell you, you are not the only Mageen. from the research i have done so far, it is an Irish name, originating from the Donegal area. It was originally Mageehan, although changed when ancestors moved from the area. other than that I have been unable to find much more. I hope this finds you well and answers at least some questions for you, if you had not already managed to find this out.
Kind regards
Christina Mageen

I've not heard "Mageen" as a first name or nickname, but I believe it's an Irish diminutive of Margaret (Scots equivalent Maggie).
I'm basing this on the name "Pegeen", the central female figure in Synge's Irish play "The Playboy of the Western World". Pegeen is apparently an endearing nickname equivalent to "Peggie". Both Maggie and Peggy are nicknames for "Margaret", so I'd hazard that the derivation of "Mageen" is as above. Works for me...
