??about meaning and pronunciation
I saw this name on another site, MAILLE. Is this a real or made up name? What is the meaning of the name. The site says this is a female variation of Molly.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi Nancy,
Several sites suggest that Maille is a Gaelic form of Molly, however all of these sites are well-known for inventing meanings for made-up names or changing the meanings of real names. So they can't be trusted.
Maille could be a variation of Maile (click hyperlink for details).
I also found this possible derivation of Maille:
Origin of the Surname O'Malley
The descendant of Malley; Mala, Gaelic, the brow of a hill; Maille, smooth, placid, gentle.
Source: An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names With an Essay on their Derivation and Import; Arthur, William, M.A.; New York, NY: Sheldon, Blake & CO., 1857.
I found that here: http://www.searchforancestors.com/surnames/origin/o/omalley.php and as you can see they have given a reputable reference.

It's definately a real name. It is indeed the Celtic/ Gaelic version of the name Molly. Molly is a form of Mary.

Usual English form of Maria, which was the Latin form of the New Testament Greek names Mariam or Maria (the spellings are interchangeable), which were from the Hebrew name Miriam. The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love". This is the name of several New Testament characters, most importantly Mary the virgin mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene. Two queens of England have had this name, as well as a Queen of Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots.

Sources?
Hi Anouk,
This site, being a facts site, has a certain requirement of proof for all name meanings and origins posted, particularly from new or recent posters. Have you got any evidence or sources for the use of Maille as a Gaelic form of Molly (other than sites like babynamesworld.com which are notorious for inventing origins and meanings)?
