variations/pronunciation of Sine
I'm wondering if Sine (Irish/Gaelic, feminine) is ever spelled with an accent on the e, so that it is pronounced shin-ay instead of shee-na, and if so, does this change the meaning? On some sites i've seen it with no accent at all, meaning given as 'god is gracious', or 'god's gracious gift'. How would that be pronounced? Any info is much appreciated!

Officially it's spelled Síne and pr'd SHEEN-uh. Accents are often left out and still pr'd the same, so just going with Sine wouldn't change that. An accented é does exist in Irish, but not often at the end of words like that, and by changing it, Síne-->Síné would no longer be the same name.Hope this helps! :-)

Sine is the Gaelic/Irish form of Jeanne, the French form of Johanna (Yohanna), the female form of the Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "G-d is gracious". :)Claire

It is pronounced (at least for me and I am the 9-10 generation) cena or sena. I understand about mispronouncing and stuff but I was bullied and tormented as a kid so I cant stand for it to be pronounced as "sign" even tho just finding out it is gailec and pronounced as sign. grrr. Lol
