definition of first name
Hi, My parents named me after a girl on american bandstand in 1956. It is not in any baby books. Does any one know the meaning or origin

I found "Marlys" as an English name listed as a variant of Marlene.
Were your parents from Philadelphia? The show was already several years old in '56 (when Dick Clark signed on) but didn't go national til mid- or late-'57. Unfortunately I have (dim) grade-school memories of that.

Perhaps it's a "tweaked" form of Marla, which, according to our webmaster, derives from Marlene, which comes form Maria Magdalene.
Possible origins:
* Mary, which in its Hebrew form means "bitterness" and "anger".
* Amaryllis, Greek, meaning "to sparkle" (complete with flower named after it).
Pick one, depending on your mood and attitude :)
