NILS from Dionysius?
I just just read a a name book (not a very reliable one), that NILS can be a Scandinavian pet form of DIONYSUS. This was absolutely new to me, always having believed that NILS was from NICHOLAS (like this site says).
Does anybody have any information?Andy ;—)

Hallo Andy!I could not find any connection between Dionysius and Nils in any Scandinavian name book. The Latin form of Nikolaos (Nikolaus) was written Nikolás in Old Norse. The name forms changed like this:Nikolás -> Niclis -> Nighils -> Niels (Danish) -> Nils (Swedish and Norwegian).Scandinavian forms of Dionysius are Dinius / Dynius (old forms) and Dines / Dønnes (modern forms)./Satu
