Re: origin and signification of Nyah

"Not much help there, tho. Sorry. ANYBODY ELSE?"
Anybody Else immediately springs to attention, delivers a snappy salute, and steps forward: "YES SIR! I think I can help, SIR!"
Dunno what the name means, but I know it's the name of the Goddess of International Jewel Thieves -- Nyah Nordoff-Hall -- who appears as a character in that Tom Cruise movie, *Mission: Impossible 2*.
Heheh, I watch a lotta moobies. :)

Yes, but somewhat selectively, I trust. Someday, we'll have to do an off-topic on actors, dead and alive -- ya know, who are your faves? Unlike my TOTALLY NEUTRAL stance on most things, I have strong opinions in this area, believe it or not.
I'm hoping someone is out there still seeing this, but I'm thinking of using the name Nyah for my soon to be child. I know the name is from MI2, but i'd like to know the real meaning and origins. I'd appreciate anyone who could let me know!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks guys... I have to admit I heard about this name in MI-2 :-) !!! Found it cute and am actually thinking of naming by baby that way if it is a girl... I found out it is an Irish name on the net but not much more about it. Any more hints or internet links??

Hey, Barbara,
While searching Google.com (The Mother of All Search Engines -- go nowhere else!), I thought we had an Irish connection as well.
There are one or two sites listed on Google that mention "Nyah" in the context of an Irish Xena, but I think it's strictly role-playing or wishful thinking as I can't substantiate use of the name from any "conventional" Irish sources. We've got some folks on here with a lot better Irish knowledge base than me who, as Nan says, may be able to tell us more. Here's hopin'. Later!

Norah, who hangs out here, is good on Irish names and may be able to confirm whether "Nyah" has any roots in the old sod. I somehow doubt it's of Irish origin though, and am more inclined to believe it hails from Asian regions. Especially seeing as how the character who bore that name in *M:I-2* appeared to be of Eurasian descent.
I'd try some message boards set up for discussions of *M:I-2* if I were you. Surely there must be some people on those boards who liked the character of Nyah so much that they set out on a quest to find out what her name means. If you find out, then come back here and let us know! :)

it means Greek goddess of the sea - or flowing river.
It is also hebrew for grandmother.
The name in MI 2 is of Greek origin.
It is also a Chinese name however I do not have their meaning of the name.

I believe the origin Latin, more specifically South American, and means waterfall.
