the cost of education...
I met an au pair from the neighborhood I work in last night named Ilze. I asked her where she is form and she said she was from South Africa. I told her I liked her name, and asked her if she knew what it meant. She said, no, so I thought I'd try to find out. I'm thinking it sounds sort of like the German name for Elizabeth, Ilsa, but I'm not sure. Anyone got anything better? I'm getting her a course sheet for the college I go to because she's interested in going to school here, so I'll probably see her next week; I'd like to tell her then.
Which brings me to another point: Do you know how much I paid for my math book today? A whopping $103.72! For one book!! It doesn't even have very many color pictures! Thank goodness the school does buy-backs at the end of the semester-for half price.

South Africa abounds with Afrikaaners who are decendants of Dutch or German settlers (I'm not sure which, but I believe they were originally Dutch).
Concerning the cost of books, a friend of mine paid @$159.00 (plus tax) for his Anatomy & Physiology textbook and I paid $20.00 (plus tax) for a Japanese calligraphy set that I needed for my language class (I could've paid $35.00 [plus tax] for the language tapes to go along with everything else, but I figured eating was a tad more important than language tapes.). By the way, 5.6% sales tax for everything but food and some medicines here in Milwaukee.

South Africa abounds with Afrikaaners who are decendants of mainly German settlers... but in order for them to all speak one language.. they used the one book available..
This was a Dutch bible.. and now they still speak a simple kind of Dutch that is easy to be understood by Dutch people like me :)
History is a funny thing!

Did your professor write the book? I love it when they assign you to buy their own book!
:)
:)
No she didn't write the book herself...
And what's really aggrivating is that I took the same class last semester (and failed :( Math is not a favorite subject of mine.) at another campus, and their book only costs $82, but this campus uses a different book, which I didn't find out until after I enrolled in the class!
On the up side, My Humanities Professor made us buy her book that she wrote, but it was only $30 AND it will get you through two semesters of her classes.
