Solomia and Volin south dakota (2 qq)
An acquaintance from Western Ukraine is called Solomia -- is this a variant of Solomon? or of Solange? (see the dictionary for this site)Secondly, is Volin South Dakota called after Volynia in Ukraine --and if so, why? (my late brother-in-law (not urki) was born there)

A 'net search revealed a fairly famous Ukrainian singer by the name of Solomia Krushelnytska, whose name is variously rendered as: Salomea Kruszelnicka, Salomea Kruscelniski, Salomea Kruceniski, Salomea Kruszeniska, Salomea Krusceniski, Salomea Kruscenischi, and Salome Krucenischi.I think the last name in that list gives us the clue that "Solomia" is actually a variation of "Salome" (click on blue link for meaning), which is essentially a feminine form of "Solomon".As for the town of Volin, South Dakota... According to this website...http://celebrate2000.cjonline.com/stories/041499/com_volin.shtml...the town was founded in 1886 and named after five French brothers (presumably, "Volin" was their surname). There appears to be descendants of the original Volin Family still living in the town of Volin today, as I found some townspeople who bear the surname of "Volin".-- Nanaea
