Does anyone know why people have middle names? My sister in law is driving everyone crazy with this question! Can someone help? Thanks

What can I say? I am hispanic (born in central america) and if you are not registered with a middle name its like a part of your is missing! I have a first name, middle name and two last names = Nancy Nohemy Garcia Garcia, my mum's maiden name is Garcia and my father was Garcia. Back in El Salvador I used my whole name (that's right first, middle name and two last names..!) I now live in Australia and I only go by my first name and last name (my dad's not that in makes any difference as they are both Garcias!). I think Its culture, very common is hispanic countries... :-D

In Mexico many people do tend to "middle" names, altho whether they're considered as "middle" or not I don't know (they could be confirmation names, etc.). Some of the folks we deal with in our organization down there are distinguished first-name-wise as "Juan Pablo", "Juan Diego", etc., rather than by any use of their last names/
The two last names thing is used in Mexico as well as (I guess) in other Hispanic cultures. Many people make no day-to-day reference to the final (mother's) last name in business dealings, but Veronica Juanita Gomez Gutierrez (unmarried) might properly sign her name in a business context "Veronica J. Gomez G."
