Origin & Meaning of Irulan??????

Hi everyone, my wife and I recently had a beautiful little girl on 9/27/04 and we named her Irulan! We first heard the name on the Real World-Las Vegas. Since then we have been trying to find out where this name originated. Can anyone out there help us? Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks a bunch!

Ha, I always wondered about that name. Irulan is the Imperial Princess in Frank Herbert's "Dune". Apparently she was named after her mother Empress Anirul. The name could be made up but many names in Dune are real (Jessica, Paul) or derived from real names (Josifa, Hasimir).

it appears to be a simple reworking of Anirul, which Herbert may have taken from a South Asian name.

It is a beautiful name, I too have wondered about it's origin because I am looking for similar names.
