I have lived w/this name for over 40 years, I was told she was a princess, and the greek myth legend of the half man/half horse, with a horn in his forehead stole her and kept her up on his hill till she was rescued by a strong man. The King paid handsomely for her safe return? I receive alot of compliments on my name, I know only of one other person to have this name, my aunt who passed away years ago. I hope this helps.
I have many encounters i'm actually named after my mother she tells me that my grandmother said that there was a queen that visited the Dominican Republic and that's where she got the name from. But i was through my own resaearch i have found that the correct spelling of my name is Deianira and that yes she was married to Hercules and that the greek pronunciation of the name is almost identical to the spanish pronunciation. i have also found that Deianira was a corn goddess of some sort and i'm still finding new information one my name
Deyanira means "destruction of man". Deyanira was married to Hercules and I forgot how the story goes but I know she was married to Hercules and Hercules was killed because of her, hence the meaning of the name. Deyanira was married to Hercules. She was not a godess.
I have fallen in love with a woman whose name is also Deyanira. She lives in Mexico. Beautiful name is it not? It means the prediction of men. Its origins is believed to be from Greece. Characteristically it means a person of good character and able to make and have good and long lasting friendships. In love she would be very possesive of the one she has given her heart to and falls in love with ease. The reason you heard it on the tv show Hercules is because she was the last woman to be his wife.
Hello!
I've have read some things about my name, but I´m still looking!
Deyanira was the las wife of Heracles the greek mithological hero.
Today, I found a page in Spanish where they said that Deyanira means:
" La perdición de los hombres" which means more or less: Men's unbridle passion or men's ruin.
According to this page, women who have this name have a good temper and make very good and long lasting friends. They are very possesive in love and fall in love easily.
You can try looking with the the other greek version: dejanira or the roman way to write it: deianira.
Good luck!

Thinking of dating Deyanira? Caveat emptor!
Deianeira means "destroying her spouse" (Liddell-Scott).
It is derived from "deios" (hostile, destructive) and "aner" (man).
Dont tell me I didnt warn you...
(note: the de- in Deianeira is an eta, not an epsilon)

PS
A number of web sites define Deianeira as "she who strings together spoils" which is complete hogwash.

I guess Hercules wasn't too quick on the uptake, huh?
...had he been an etymologist, on the other hand... :P
Calling Pavlos
According to Greek legend, Deianeira was the wife of Hercules who unwittingly brought about Hercules' demise by believing a lie told to her by the centaur, Nessus.
As for what the name "Deianeira" actually means... I guess we'll have to wait for Pavlos, our resident Greek etymologist, to decipher that one.
What may be of interest to you... According to the Social Security Administration's Office of the Chief Actuary, there was a total of 43 girl children born last year whose parents filed a Social Security application for them, who were given the name of "Deyanira". There were 44 girl children given the name of "Deyaneira".

As luck would have it, I opened the paper this morning and there was a large photo of a Cuban woman visiting the new Elian Gonzalez museum in Miami. Her name? Deyanira Garcia (no meaning given).
- Da.
- Da.
Yeah, the museum was supposedly opened by the pea-brained Miami relatives to "embarrass" the U.S. Personally, I think Elian's Miami cousin, Marisleysis Gonzalez, more than balances out ANY possible embarrassment scales. If I had to be seen in public with a drama queen chick like that for a cousin, I'd freakin' *swim* back to Cuba. "That picture that they showed with the father, that is not Elian! That hair is not Elian's!!" That chick is so stupid, if she had a brain she'd take it out to play with it.
