Rauny doesn't exist in Finland, but Rauni sure is a Finnish name. It's currently being listed as female name in name books, but it has always been rather unisex [Note: unisex names are very rare in Finnish.], or one of whose gender there has been controversy. The origins of Rauni aren't that straightforward, though. Some say it's a Finnish variant of the Old Norse word 'raun'(Old Norse for 'rowan'). Some say Rauni is a Finnish variant of the family of Norse names starting with Ragn- (Ragnhild, Ragna...). Meanwhile, some claim it to be of ancient Finnish origin. In Finnish mythology, Rauni was the wife of Ukko (the god of thunder), but according to some interpretations, Rauni could also be used as an epithet for Ukko (and thus be a male name). Confusing, eh?Rauni isn't wildly popular. Most bearers of this name are 50+. I've met only one Rauni in my life (female, around 50).Hope this helps!
