Achie
Hi, I've been wondering for a LONG time about my youngest sister's middle name, "Achie." My great-grandmother's first name was "Achie." When searching census records, I have noted that the name has been used for males as well as females. (The name "Achie" popped up on census records around the 1850's, I think, so perhaps it is a variant of another name?) I'd like to think that Achie is of Scottish/Welsh origin, since my great-grandmother was of that origin as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, the initials AG would give you Achie or something close to it; if a lot of people in the family had names starting with an H then she might have been Little H-ie; if they were Scottish then it might have been an attempt to feminise Archie. Any of these, in the hands of a bored bureaucrat filling in forms, could come out at Achie ... luckily for Great-Gran, she was about a century too early for that ghastly Achy Breaky Heart song!
