origin of ancestors name
Hello there
I am currently researching my ancestors & have got as far back as 1652 (Petri Hough).Obviously this is not a commonly used English name & i am looking for any ideas as to were the name originates from.
His two chilren were named, Guilielm & Petrus, again not familiar English names.
In fact the first Known names were the next generation, who were called John & Peter Hough. These were born in 1702 & 1704 respectively. If any body has information regarding the origins of the names Petri,Guilielm or Petrus, ie which country they are or were commonly used i would be extremely grateful.
I can be contacted on budgie39@ntlworld.com
Many thanks

Thank you all,i've got something to look for now.
The early records were parish records so there is a possible of them being 'latinised' but i have no idea.
The Flemish idea looks like i might follow up on but i would also like to trace the surname as well.?
Thanks again.

Guilielm
Guilielm is the name of one of my ancestors. Born in Liege, Belgium. Accoding to my family tree, this people where Flemish speakers, so Guilielm should be the Flemish version of William.

You're sure...
That the names are not just William and Peter, and that your source is not one in which all the names are latinised?

I was wondering the same thing
Peter is a common name in my family tree and I've seen some documents that list Peter as Petri or Petrus.
