I cannot find the name Heyward. It is my son's middle name, and he is supposed to find the meaning of it. This was also his grandfather's first name, and his uncle's middle name. Thank you.

An old name book of mine states Hayward as meaning "keeper of the hedge or hedged enclosure." I assume that Heyward is a variant spelling of that name.

Hedge . . .The 'hay' element in Old English names doesn't mean 'hedge' - it is usually from heg, meaning "hay" (funny, that :-D). Most name books are notoriously inaccurate, usually going by the "if we don't know or don't like it we'll make it up, no-one will know any better" principle!:-)

Heyward is most likely a variant spelling of Hayward, an Old English place name most likely composed of the elements heg meaning "hay" and weard meaning "guard". (as in Hayley and Edward - click hyperlinks):-)
