Maverick
An old co-worker of mine named her son this. She liked the meaning (rebellious, self-starter, independent). The name is quite unusual..but it kinda sounds like a movie star name, doesn't it? wdyt of Maverick?

I always thought Maverick and Marshall would be great twin names. They are both pretty cool.

All I think of is the Dallas Mavericks, out of the NBA (basketball). The Mavericks were an ex's favorite team. Without the connection, I would probably like to use it, even though this is my third of fourth time hearing on a board that someone liked the name.

It's no worse than Racer, Rebel & Rocket (Robert Rodriguez's sons)

This is one "word" name that, if it wasn't taken colloquially to be a word, I'd adore it.. but the word wrecks it for me; the word makes it sort of country-synthetic to me, like Shyanne. It seems like the sort of name that'd be adopted by a guy who was putting on an image. That's really unfortunate since the name itself sounds and looks great. If I recall correctly, the word "maverick" actually does derive from a surname, which apparently doesn't mean the same thing as the word. The word meaning comes from a bearer of the name (Texas rancher who didn't brand, leading to unbranded cattle being called mavericks, leading to the colloquial word).I don't know what the name means, though.Anyway, since I'm a huge fan of both M and -rick, this name would be a big fave of mine if not for the ranching and rebellious references. They turn me off it bigtime. - chazda

There's a movie named "Maverick" with Jodie Foster in it...that's the first thing I think of. I don't like it as a name...it's also the nickname of Tom Cruise in "Top Gun."

I like it but would never use it.
