Re: Lyra
Out of curiosity, has anyone encountered anyone named this before The Golden Compass (UK: Northern Lights... I think) was published? One poster here has a niece named for that Lyra. :)I don't know about real people by the name, but I know I loved Lyra-prn-LEER-ah when I was little. I had a huge number of Barbie dolls, but a few of them had "always" names--one was always Charity when we played with her, and another was always Lyra-LEER-ah.I'm sure it was used in the past, though not frequently at all. ;)I like the name Lyra, but I'm frustrated at the fact that everyone (including me--damn you, Phillip Pullman!) would pronounce it LYE-rah rather than LEER-ah, so I'd never consider it myself.Array

Interesting you should say that. While I am aware of the Pullman books, and actually plan to read them before the movies start coming out (this Christmas!), I was not aware that they feature a character named Lyra, and would not have guessed that the name is prn LYE-ra in the books. Wouldn't have known any of that if you hadn't posted this! At least, not until I'd got around to starting my reading.Learn somethin new every day. :-)

I'm not sure if it was ever clearly stated that it was pronunced Lyra.At least in none of the books; Pullmaan might have said something at one point. I do recommend the books, they are fabulous. (Fab enoguh for my niece to be named them!)
