Laramie?
What do you think of the name Laramie for a little boy? I first heard of it as the name of Fort Laramie, and it was used on a few children born on the Oregon trail near the aforementioned Fort. It is pronounced Lair-uh-mee. Do you think it would be best as a fn or mn? Also, what names do you think go well with it?

Like Lillian, I first thought of the city. I love The Simpsons but didn't know that was the brand of cigarette they use on the show. Yes I know about Matthew Shepard, and yes I agree it's a pseudo-cowboy or -cowgirl name. But I just think of the town. Maybe that's from living out West most of my life.
Anyway I think it's cute and has a nice sound. But it's a little too cute.

Something about its flow just puts me off. Some names or words just kind of have an unpleasant feeling when I say them. Carmichael is another that I can think of off the top of my head. It's hard to describe it--cheesy or smarmy is probably what I'm going for. Laramie totally fits that bill.
The fictional cigarette brand and the fort don't bother me, which are the first things I think of. But the sound of it does.

Love your sig!
Thanks! :-)
I've met two little girls named Laramie
but no boys. I've also heard of little girls named Bellamie, and even one named Jeramie. For this reason the "-mie" ending seems feminine to me, and I wouldn't use it for a boy.
That said, bein a live-and-let-live kinda gal, I won't tell you it's a bad name; no worse than many and better than a few. I will say that while I am a Simpsons fan and I know the M.Shepard story, neither of those references was the first thing I thought of. Those references may be enough to dissuade you from using it, but I want to point out not everyone will think the way we BtNers do, to say the least. Most people will simply think of the city. I don't see how that's any worse than naming a little girl Paris or London.

Aren't there any simpsons fans on here?
The brand of cigarettes on the Simpsons is Laramie.
It's the first thing that came to mind for me.

In "The Simpsons" the cigarette brand they always use is "Laramie." That's what it ALWAYS reminds me of. Lol, Sorry!!
Isn't Laramie the brand of ciggarettes used on The Simpsons?
The only Laramie I ever heard of was a girl I went to high school with. I thought it was kind of pretty at first hearing it, but I changed my mind. She had apparently gotten called larry a lot in early years, so that's a drawback. Also, I'm sorry to say she had a very bad reputation, she bragged about being with 22 different men and boys one weekend and rumor was she had a few different diseases. I don't doubt it.
I would not use it for a boy, it just sounds like a girls' name. Sad to say, names that would go with it as siblings would be Cody, Cheyenne, Dakota and that kind of wannabe cowboy or cowgirl names.

Oh, now that you mentioned it in the category of "wannabe cowboy/gowgirl" names I am immediately turned off by it. It has officially been removed from my list!
The Matthew Shepard connotations didn't turn you off but pseudo-cowboy did? Huh.
Both together did...(
lol
Dallas, Cheyenne, Maverick, it's always funny to see those names used, because nine times out of ten they're used by parents who've never been out West in their lives and whose main view of the West is watching reruns of "Dr. Quinn" or "Walker Texas Ranger."
I propose these people branch out a bit and start using some less common Western names. How's this for size?
Lasso
Pommel
Mustang
Stirrup
Saddle Sores
Cow-Pie
Cactus

And those of us from the area (1 hr south of Cheyenne and Laramie) would never dream of naming a child we love after places like those. :P
Lol
Well, I have been west, but when I hear names like that I think of the people you think of, therefore I want to steer completely clear of those types of names!
About your other names, I am pretty sure there are children out there with the name Mustang...male and female. That is sad.

Matthew Shepard. That is all.
Sadly, true.
Such a tragedy, I wouldn't want the one and only association people had with my child's name to be a brutal hate crime.

i can honestly say i dont get the connection? [m]
I know who Matthew Shepherd is, but what does he have to do with the name? I know what happend to him, is it a name involved in what happend? I don't remember. If so I wouldn't use it.

Sabrina
You've been here long enough to know the rules about using caps and what not. It's getting annoying.

sorry I keep forgetting. at first I thought you meant caps like I was shouting, I was thinking "no I wasn't?" but now I get what you mean.
However where does it say in the rules that it has to be capitalized? Just asking, as I can't find it. Though I understand it looks nicer when capitalized.

Yep, than they made a movie about it, "The Laramie Project"
Personally when I hear the name I automatically associate it with The Laramie Project, about the gay boy that was murdered in Wyoming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Laramie_Project). I sense that other people may have the same assocaition. It seems quite surname-y to me also which puts me off a little bit. I think I would prefer to see Jeremy...though thats probably not a name your really interested in.
Ditto.
And as a side note, mentioning of this play always makes me a little angry/bitter, because our school board completely dashed the idea of performing it because the homosexual themes may offend people. I have a feeling they missed the point entirely.

Actually, I like the name Jeremy, but I was just wondering about Laramie. Thanks for the input, it helps me decide wether to use it or not.
