I think it's wonderfully handsome. So many French boy names are--they're just classy in a way Camden and Jayden aren't. ;)
Plus, it sounds really...athletic, I suppose, and strong, to me, because it always reminds me of fencing. The similarity to "epee", I suppose.

This name is on my official faves list; it always reminds me of Rutger Hauer, on whom I've been crushing since I was sixteen (nearly 23 yr!). He played a knight named Étienne de Navarre in the movie Ladyhawke. Not the best movie ever made, by any means, but fun to look at him in it.

That's a good enough reason to like a name. I like the name Shaun because of an eleven year long crush on the dashing South African cricketer Shaun Pollock. I think you got the pronunciation spot on - much better than my attempt. Anyway I don't see the name often that's why I am curious to learn what people think of it.

Neat, isn't it, the psychology of names, how our feelings about names and real people are so intertwined and nearly impossible to separate.
Funny enough, I love the name Sean, but also have a special place in my heart for someone who spells it Shaun, like your cricketer. ;D
And I just thought to add, it's odd, but as much as I like Étienne I don't care for Steven / Stephen so much; I don't dislike them, I just don't get the warm fuzzies either.

I know exactly what you mean. Most of my favourite names have personal meanings that transcend far beyond etymologies, popularity & sound. And I think that applies to most of the posters in one way or another. That's why I always appreciate it when posters tell the story behind a particular name & why it is so special to them - like you did with Etienne.

Oh I have been meaning to tell you I love the bindi that you wear on your forehead. It makes you look pleasantly exotic & mysterious.

I used to know a litte boy called Etienne, he was gorgeous but a little terror, so i always connect that name with trouble now! I liked it before i knew him!!!
