I don't particularly like the name but sounds mermaid-y to me. And yes, Ariella is too strongly associated with Disney imo, so I'd go with Nereida.

I think it would work very well for a mermaid :)

I met a woman named Nereida once. I really liked her name. She was from Puerto Rico and married an Italian-American. They had three little girls with lovely names: Chiara, Sabrina and Victoria. She told me they had to avoid several names they really liked because their families couldn't pronounce them.

BTW, I love Ariella. It isn't as Disney to me as Arielle.

On the contrary, I like Nereida. I might not name my kids it, but I think it's very pretty for a mermaid princess. (:

I don't know how it is to be pronounced, so my brain would stumble over it every time I came across it in the story. I hate it when that happens and find it distracting.

How about Aurelia? Has the same sound as Ariella, but is a different name.
