Ariel
What are your opinions on Ariel on a boy? Do you think he'd be made fun of or is it too girly?
Replies
yes
I think of the littel mermaid, or people pronouncing my name wrong, so I completely associate it with a girl and would never do that to a boy.

Ariel is definitely still a male name in Hispanic culture, as well as in Israel. In many non-Hispanic neighborhoods in the USA, it will be primarily thought of as feminine and may well lead to some teasing. However, contrary to popular belief, such teasing is not a major negative influence on a boy's development, and IF parents arm their son with information to help him overcome this, such as the facts about the many male Ariels that have existed in the past, I think it's fine for it to be given to a boy.

I think it is too girly. To me there's only one Ariel & that's the little mermaid.

Ariel on a boy just doesn't work with me. It's a Disney Princess name, girly as it gets. Fine on someone else's kid - after all, I know it's perfectly legit on a male - but to me, calling my son Ariel would be equal to calling my daughter Aladdin.

I only like it for a girl.
Ariel is a boy's name. Arielle is the feminine form

I have known more male Ariels than female, so I have no problem seeing it on a boy. Granted, I didn't know any of these Ariels when I was at the age when it was still funny to make Little Mermaid jokes. Anyhow, they all pronounce the name AW-ree-ull or aw-RyELL, not AIR-ee-ull like the Little Mermaid. I think it's a gorgeous name. And he can always go by Ari if he's teased.
I know a guy named Ariel.
Substitute: Where's Ariel? Is she here today? Class bursts out laughing, or he just feels bad for being mistaken for a girl.
Please, save your kid from a load of embarassment. It's obviously feminine. There's no getting away with it after the Little Mermaid movie.
