My aunt's name is Valerie and my cousin's girlfriend is Valene and they both go by Val this could get confusing!

Definitely Valerie. It always makes me think of the Steve Winwood song, but that's not a bad thing. Valene, on the other hand, is too "Knot's Landing" for this child of the 80s. I just know it was the name of a bitchy, long-running character on that show (even though I probably only saw the show once or twice in my life) played by Joan Van Ark.

I prefer Valerie, which is a favourite of mine. Valene is fun in a 19th-century kreaytif way, but Valerie doesn't remind me of valence electrons, so it wins. :D

Definitely Valerie. Valene just sounds like a drug to me - I think it makes me think of Valium, for some reason.
