I love Elspeth.. it is very Scottish sounding to me, but I've always preferred it to Elizabeth. I can see it on a Scottish character or woman for sure. I think it makes a more interesting name or mn than Elizabeth, even for someone who isn't Scottish.
I picture (this is influenced by a character I read once) a gentle, genteel, pale & wispy person, a homebody and bookworm with a generous spirit.
