Ruby kinda makes me think of a dog though.

I don't think Ruby sounds like a dog. I love the name. I have a great-aunt with the name, so I would never use it myself- but I still love it.

Dana would be OK for a mn, but I don't like it much for a first.

I like both names, although I personally prefer Dana as a boy's name.
