Nathaniel
I really like it--I have since reading Jo's Boys. Now, I'm in the middle of the Bartimaeus trilogy, which has a fabulous Nathaniel, and I'm really thinking about it a lot. However, I only like it if he's called by his full name, or Nat (or Natty as a pet form hehe). I loathe Nate with every fiber of my being. My questions:1. What do you think of Nathaniel "Nat"?
2. Do you think a Nathaniel could get by being called Nat in the United States, or do you think that the "Nathaniel = Nate" line of thought is too strong? I've never met a real Nat, which is why I ask.
3. Combo ideas? My mind's a bit blank on them right now.Thank you!Array (not going too mainstream, she hopes ;)

Nat isn't too common but I think you could go by Nat. (Nat King Cole comes to mind).
Nathaniel as a full name is lovely. I like Nathan too but Nathaniel is even better.

I LOVE Nathaniel, but loathe Nat. It reminds me of gnats.I think it could work, but he might decide to go by Nate or Nathan, and you'd have to deal with that.Nathaniel Hawk and Nathaniel Crow would both be nice. I'm having a brain fart at the moment, though.

I adore Nathaniel, however avoid it because I can't stand Nathan or Nate : (And I do think it will be difficult to keep people from wanting to call Nathaniel by either Nathan or Nate. If you make sure that the only nickname he considers is Nat from an early age, than he can make sure to correct people himself : )Nathaniel Ignatius comes to mind right now.

Well simply to answer your questions, I loathe Nate as well, but Nat is kind of cute (as well as Natty). As for as Nate being too strong, I really dont know why you would think that would have a problem. Personally, its what the parents choose becomes the ultimate nn. I personally hate Kristi, and thats what most people call me because its what I've been called by my family all my life. I never really liked it, but couldnt get them to stop, and I just gave up fighting it. If you call your son Nat, he will be known as Nat. In school, in my experience, teachers ask if you go by your full name or have a nn. They may ask if he prefers Nate, but he could correct them and say Nat...its not that big of a deal. I hope that makes sense. Simply stated, dont worry about Nate being more popular. Its like someone named Thomas going by Tommy instead of Tom kind of thing. ~~Kris~~

I've always liked the name Nathaniel. But it's hard to stop people from calling a Nathaniel Nate, at least in the US.A friend of mine is named Nathaniel, and nearly everyone calls him Nate. Except his parents call him Nat (and his brother calls him "The Gnat"), but he prefers Nate, and his business cards say Nathan, not Nathaniel.Combos:Nathaniel Charles
Nathaniel Christopher
Nathaniel Reece

What an interesting-sounding guy. :) Thanks for your opinions!I'm afraid all those combos are a bit too...classic, shall we say?...for my tastes, lol. It might be worth noting that Nathaniel is up there with Morpheus, Ignatius, Evening, and Pandora, hehe. ;)Array

1. What do you think of Nathaniel "Nat"? - I fell in love with this name, with this nn only, after watching the adorably young Elijah Wood in "Forever Young". But then Nathaniel got too popular and I was never as fond of Nathan or Nate, which people seem to automatically shorten it to nowadays. *sigh* 2. Do you think a Nathaniel could get by being called Nat in the United States, or do you think that the "Nathaniel = Nate" line of thought is too strong? I've never met a real Nat, which is why I ask. - I've never met a boy Nat myself, though I know several Natalie who are occasionally called Nat. :-/ I think it might be an uphill battle but it is surely possible. :) 3. Combo ideas? My mind's a bit blank on them right now. - Sadly, mine is, too. I'm too devoid of combos--or many important thoughts at all!--these days. :-/ Signed-

*sigh* Nathaniel is quite popular. But good God--the aforementioned characters! So fabulous! Especially Nat of Little Men and Jo's Boys, because he played the violin.*who believes her neglected problem of sleep apnea has finally eaten away at her brain and good sense* :b Le pauvre Isla! Be well, okay? As well as you can be, at least. :)Array

Nathaniel is very interesting, I have a cousin in his 30's whose name is Nathan and he goes by Nat or Nath (nayth). In Australia your 100 times more likely to get Nat or Nath, Nate is hardly ever heard/seen. Nathaniel Lazarus
