I'm just the opposite--I prefer Louis over Lewis. :-) I always see the "lew" in Lewis and connect it to "lewd."
I like Louis, though. It's a bit old mannish, but if I was to use it as a baby's name then it'd change my connotation. If you're worried about how well it works in that respect then using it as a middle name is perfect. It doesn't sound old mannish to me as a middle name; rather it's just like part of a name. Like Howard is pretty dated, but when I stick it into a combo I like (William Howard--I quite like it) I think it sounds great.
