Artemis Fowl
I recently started tutoring a seventh grader named Vikram who's reading a series of books about Artemis Fowl, a teenaged boy who solves hard math equations and is generally really smart.I was really surprised that the male character's name is Artemis, which is all girl to me. So, what do you think of Artemis on a boy? WDYT of Vikram?I like Vikram. This young man is exceptionally bright, and he really made me love the name."No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

I gotta say it seems male to me...*only* because my first exposure to the name was in those books. Artemis Fowl. However, I wouldn't use it on a boy. If I were to use it, it would be on a female.

I like Artemis on a girl, but Artemus on a boy, now that Array suggests it.The character is very smart, but he deals mainly with evil plots to make money. He gets embroiled in a secret fairy world while he searches for gold! When i read the book, I was thinking, "Isn't Artemis a girl's name?" Until I got to the part where it explained that it was a family name and for "hunters." After reading, it didn't strike me as that odd any longer. Now, I tend to think of the character when I hear the name, but I do know it's a girls name. I picture little Arty first, then a godess with a huge bow and arrow!Vikram is very cute! I like it!

Sounds ... like the parents did very superficial reading into choosing a fanciful "classical unique" name. Completely missing the fact that Artemis was a goddess.Or else they're trying to be cutting edge by naming cross gender. LOL- mirfak

I love those books! I didn't actually know the name Artemis before I read them, so it seems just as masculine as feminine to me.The fact that Artemis is a female name is mentioned in the books, I quote: "About my name-Artemis-you were right. In London, it is generally a female name, after the Greek goddess of archery. But every now and then, a male aomes along with such a talent for hunting that he earns the right to use the name. I am that male."
Judging by that, I think Eoin Colfer (the author) knew perfectly well that he was using a girl's name.Vikram sounds a bit odd, very spiky somehow. I don't really like it.

Haha, yup. I was about to post that, then I saw your post! He did it on purpose.

I like Artemus for a boy, but notsomuch for Artemis. The sound works on either sex for me; I remember the old Disney show The Famous Jett Jackson, on which Silverstone's mentor was named Artemus. In fact, now that I think about it, I really like Artemus. It's quite handsome.I think Vikram's a publishing house--or it sounds like one, at least. It doesn't do anything for me.Array

The use of Artemis as a male name may well come from confusing it with the similar name Artemas, the name of a male companion of the Apostle Paul mentioned in the Book of Titus in the New Testament:http://www.ccel.org/bible/phillips/CPn17Titus.htmAccording to tradition the Artemas mentioned in Titus later went on to become bishop of the city of Lystra in Asia Minor. (There were also other early Christian saints named Artemas.)http://www.mpc.org.mk/english/Calendar/prologue.asp?id=2011

Since Artemis was a goddess, I certainly wouldn't name a boy that. They actually mention why in the books (besides the fact that he's named for his father) but I forget why. It's actually a great series, but I don't remember math equations being a big part!Vikram is a cool name, tho I wouldn't use it, but it reminds me of Victor Krum.

I can't imagine a boy named Artemis, it would be like namign a boy Aphrodite or Diana. (As a matter of fact, I can't imagine ANYBODY named Artemis in real life!) I have heard of the Fowl series but I haven't read any of them. I wonder if the name choice might be intended for laughs. When I first saw the full name, I assumed the main character would be a chicken. lolDon't care for Vikram, it's just too strange to my American ears. I assume he's of East Indian descent, in which case the name probably makes perfect sense. It just sounds hard and rather scary to me, and also makes me thik of Vicks Vaporub or something.

My great, great uncle was named Artemis (pr. ar-TEAM-us). Everyone called him Uncle Team. Weird! I don't think it works for a boy at all. Vikram is different but I'm not sure I like it. I'd have to give it some thought.

Vikram makes me think of Viking. I'm not sure on the pronounciation, is it VIE-krum or VICK-rum? I think it could grow on me.
I don't like Artemis on a boy at all, and even on a girl I just don't like it much. Nothing wrong with it for a girl, just not something I'd use.Photobucket - Video and Image HostingLoving the names Alexa Noelle and Owen Seth

With that pronounciation, it's not so much like Viking. I guess it was the spelling that made me think Viking. I think I like it.Photobucket - Video and Image HostingLoving the names Alexa Noelle and Owen Seth
