Mamie & Maisie
I really like the names Mamie and Maisie right now, but I don't think I like them as independent names. I know that they are nicknames for Mary and Margaret, respectively, but Mamie doesn't sound like Mary and Maisie doesn't sound like Margaret. I have two questions for you. First, WDYTO Mamie and Margaret? Second, can you think of any other names that sound more like Mamie and Maisie that could have those nicknames? All I can think of right now are Mame and Maise.

I love both Mamie and Maisie, although I like Maisie better. I agree with iris that they are so far removed from Mary and Margaret that they can stand alone.
Even though both are longer than May, I think each of them could be used as a nn for May. Well, maybe I'm stretching, just because I love the name May so much.

I went to school with a Marnie (g). Her full name was Margueretta (sp?).
I like Mamie and Maisie although I like Mamie more than Maisie. Like you I don't care for them as nns for Mary and Margaret. I think they're removed enough in sound from their original sources that I would use them as freestanding names and not nns.
