Kate?
In your opinion does Kate make a valid fn? or is it strictly a nn to Katherine, Kaitlyn, Katya etc.....The reason I am asking is I really want to honor my mother named Catherine, but I really don't like the name, or its alternatives except for Kate. Her mn is Anne, but that is a little dull to me, and it doesn't really honor her b/c she never uses Anne. If there are other names like Katherine/Catherine, then I would like to know, but just some overall opinions.OHHH another thing, I have a 2nd cousin whom i see on some holidays, but not to often named Katelyn. would Kate and a 3rd cousin Katelyn be too close? Thanks in advance!~Tia~

Wow! What great taste you have!Hehe! Well, as you can see, I am a Kate. Not Katherine, Katelyn, or anything like that, just Kate. I like it as a name well enough, so, yeah, I'd encourage you to use it. I don't think that Katelyn and Kate are too close, not at all. ;D

Kate is a lovely name. It would totally honor your mum, and I like it as a first name. But if your name is short (like Smith, Watt, ect.) don't, or if it is a last name you hear a lot (like Baker, and Smith again). It goes well with long or unusual ln (like Ross-Weatherwurst or Sciaraffa.) Give the child a really unusual or long mn, though (like Coriander, Juniper, Dallas, Ireland, Periwinkle-not Periwinkle-Jessique, Thalia, etc.) That way she can always go with that name if it's her type and Kate isn't. And the cousin: don't worry. I don't think she will have a problem with it, she might even feel like you're flattering her. Hope I was helpful!

I love Kate. But the only full name that I like for it is Catherine. I would much rather use Kate as a name by itself; I think it's substantial enough.

Alternative forms / variants of Catherine:Catriona ("ca-TREE-uh-na" or "ca-TREE-na")
Katrina
Katrin
Ekaterina
Katia / Katya
Kaia
Karen
Kay
Caterina
Catalina
Cathleen / Kathleen
Kateri ("KAH-ter-ee")Would Catherine be so bad if you will be using Kate as her real, day-to-day name? She might appreciate having her great-grandmother's name, in the same form.

I love the name Kate. Katherine is in my top 3 combo's because I love the name also but would likely call the girl Kate. I think it is perfectly fine by me.Proud Auntie!

I think that Kate would work quite nicely on its own. Good luck!

Kathleen? Despite really hating the fact people dont stick with the classic names (for the main reason, because I prefer the classic over the nn, and would call them by their full name), a lot of people are using nns as fns nowadays. How many Nick, Tom, Mike, Joe, Kristy, Chris, and many others do you see without the full name. I think the same goes for Kate. It works, although, I dont like the idea simply because I call all Katherine's I know, Katherine and not Kate (even if thats what they go by)~~Kris~~
