I much prefer Beatrice (it's one of my favorites) but that's mostly because 1) I couldn't tolerate the nn Trixie, lol, and 2) the "trix" part reminds me of the cereal. :)

I like it. I don't think it sounds snobish, maybe only a tiny bit. I love the nn Bea. Trix is another you could use.
I don't think it's very popular, I only know one single Beate, but no Beatrix. Except for Beatrix Potter! :-)

My friend is OBSESSED with this name. She doesnt care what the father says, her first daughter will be Beatrix nn Trixie. Her obsession came from a book series she read as a kid, Trixie Beldon or something...
