Sappho.
I posted this name a long time ago, and I'm reposting it. I love this name. I know that she's connected with lesbianism, but to me, there is no sin in that. I love the name, I love the poet, I love the history, and I love the meaning. Could I get away with using this as a name? Most people probably don't know who she is (which is a sad fact), so most people wouldn't know the history of the name.Opinions?Siri

I know who she is, but I read poetry so not evrybody may. However when I first learned about her I heard that she started a school for girls on an island named Lesbo, which bore that name long before she went there, and wasn't a lesbian at all.(I'm not saying that was a good or bad thing, I'm just posting my facts.) However I still think the teasing facter is very high and I wouldn't use this name for a kid.

You're correct

My only concern would be that with most people the only association they have with Sappho is lesbianism. Perhaps you could use it as a mn instead.

Sappho is a nice name, but I think it would be a difficult name to live your life with. I think almost everyone knows who she is, even those who are not into her poetry. The teasing factor is huge with this name.
