Pierce / Piers?
Replies
Stick with Peter definitely. Pierce is ok, but Piers to me is one of those 'posh', upper-class sounding names certain people use (in the UK anyway) that just sounds a little bit pretentious to me :-/
Pierce has slightly more of an edge to it, it's 'cooler' than Piers IMO, but I really do think Peter is the best, it's one of my favourite names :-)

I like Piers more than Pierce or Peter.

I like Piers. Pierce looks too sharp.
I also like Pearse, but this may be too Irish?
"You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams."

Nice alternative to plain Peter.
I said nt, y'know.

love Pierce! (Ever since Remington Steele, back before many of you were born)
I like Pierce very much. It's one of the short, memorable names that has always sounded cool to me. I like Peter enough but I definitely find Pierce to be more interesting. I wouldn't go for Piers on account if it also be a plural noun.

I like both names, actually instead of Peter.
I've liked Piers since I saw it used in a book I was reading. And Pierce is a name I just think looks cool, even if it is a word. I used it for a character, Johnathan Pierce Patrick.

I adore both names. Peter is my #1 favorite for a boy. LOVE it.
Piers is so sophisticated and dashing. How could a Piers not break hearts? But pronunciation is a problem, at least here in the U.S. I've enver heard it pronounced "piss," as Array puts it. My sense is that most people here would tend to say, "peerz," with a "z" sound at the end. It's a shame because it is so gorgeous when pronounced properly.
So for me it depends on where you live. If it's in the U.K., or another place where pronunciation isn't a problem, then go for Piers. But if in the U.S., then Peter is your best bet.
P.S. I misread your title. I thought it was Peter / Piers. i'm not a fan of the Pierce spelling, even though it makes the pronunciation much clearer. I just dislike surnames as fns and Pierce looks like a surname. I do, however like the variant Pearce. I've never seen Pearce as a surname. It was suggested on another site as a variant of Piers.

I've heard that in some accents, it sounds like "piss." [edited]
I've never actually heard Pierce pronunced in such a way--in my accent, we enunciate R's pretty firmly--but that's enough of a sticking point that I'd pass on it.

ETA: Is Piers supposed to sound just like Pierce, as Bear indicated?
Wow--I've always pronunced it like the word, as in, "There are three piers on this side of the lake." Bear is right that if you're planning on Piers-sounds-like-Pierce, you're going to have pronunciation problems.
I never knew the "right" pronunciation. Huh. Learn new things every day. :D
"That was the thing about aliens that no one ever really expected. They're a bit dull."
