I think Catriona would be okay becaue imo it isn't pronouced the same.

Wow, I actually didn't even think of that until I read your post. So, no I wouldn't think of the hurricane. A lot of people who suffered through the hurricane named their daughters Katrina after Miss Hurricane herself, which blows my mind. But hey, people still name their sons Andrew! I think if you love the name, you should use it.

There are lots of names that have belonged to strong hurricanes. If you avoided using all of them, you'd miss out on some good names. =) I like Isabel Katrina, though it's not something I'd use. Since it's just the mn, I don't really think it'd be a big deal.

Being from the Houston area, and experiencing the effects of Katrina very much even now, I would definitely not use it. For those of us down here (we still have thousands of refugees without homes or jobs in this area) Katrina is not over yet. However, you know best whether people in your area will still have that association or not and that's really what matters, I guess. The spelling of Catriona would also help with the association. I think it's much prettier than Katrina.

I know it seems silly that I am responding to myself. But I guess I thought maybe I could give a little insight from someone a little bit closer to the association in question. I experienced Hurricane Rita personally. The actually storm and destruction of Katrina I didn't experience. But I would feel alot better about using Rita because the association there is just the actual destruction of the natural storm. I think Katrina is a little more complicated with the the violent crimes and subhuman comditions for tens of thousands in the days following the storm... Those are the things that I wouldn't want my child's name associated with. I was born during Hurricane Alicia and lots of women were naming there babies Alicia in memory of the storm and I think that's a great idea. Katrina just reminds me of the terrible things that happened in New Orleans just after the storm and the bodies, the piles of cars that are stil everywhere, the people in the hospitals with no clean water for days... Having personal acqauintances that experienced this, I felt I should share. But again, that is my point of view because of my region. In another region those things may not be in mind. I just thought you all might be interested in the association from another area. I hope no one is offended by this.

IMO I think hurrican Andrew didn't effect the popularity of the name Andrew because Andrew has been in the top 10 or 20 for decades!
katrina on the other hand, has never been a popular name, most people have only heard it associated with hurricane Katrina. I would not use it, I would not want any child's name associated with that much death, misery and destruction.

Well, first of all, I know from being on BTn that Catriona is pronounced like Katrina, but VERy few people in the US would know that. So if you want the pronunciation, better off to stick with Katrina.
Yes, for right now Katrina is very much associated with the hurricane. However, I don't think that will last very long, at least it shouldn't in areas less affected by the storm. After all, Andrew was devastating and there's no shortage of little Andrews running around. Maybe it got less poular in Florida in the couple of years following Hurricane Andrew, but it doesn't seem to have suffered any lasting unpopularity.
I would avodi Isabel Katrina, as Isabel was another very strong hurricane a couple years ago, and people might wonder if you've got a thing for storms. (Isabel wasn't anything like Katrina, but it still did some damage, even aroudn here in Delaware. I remember it.)

I don't think that the hurricane should make this name taboo. It's a pretty name and should be used.
Personally, I like Isobel Catriona...I just like the sound of Catriona better than Katrina; I think it has a softer, more feminine sound.
