Very Ancient Rome - makes me think of of Marcus Aurelius :) I love historical names, so that't definitely not a bad association.
I love this name. It's nicely unusual and sophistocated, yet somehow very sweet. It's a nice alternative to Alexander, Andrew, and other common A names.
As for nns, how about Eli, Elias, or Elliot? I know they're a bit strecthy, but I couldn't come up with anything else. This is a very difficult name to shorten...
