Ryan for a girl?
Replies
I knew several Ryans growing up - all boys - and it's also a terrific Irish surname. That said, I think it's awful for a girl, would only use it if it's a family name and then only as a middle name.
I'm probably one of the very few, but I like Ryan as either a boy or a girl's name; however, I prefer the sp. Ryane for a girl. There's just something about it that appeals to me...I'd proably be more inclined to use it as a MN rather than a FN, but it is cute imo.

NO!
I only like Ryan on a boy for both first & middle names. The only way I don't mind Ryan on a girl is when its a middle name or its honoring someone and used as a first or middle name.

I don't like it on a boy and I detest it on a girl.

Ryan is way too masculine

I have an Eight year old cousin, her name is Riane but they pronounce it just like Ryan.
I think there's a girl version Ryanne?
Is there? Well, I've seen it done before, where it was someone's creativity or an established name, I don't know.
Either way, I'm not a fan. There are just so many nice girl names to choose from. It seems a real shame to me that some would let those go to waste and choose something masculine instead.

I love Ryan for a boy, it's my favorite boy's name, but I also like it for a girl...I don't know why but I really do, it just loks and sounds cute for a girl. I like it almost as much as on a boy, although I wouldn't ever use it for my child.

I like it, but traditionalist like many who visit this site (lured by etymology) won't. To me its a surname and therefore up for grabs without question (although I don't mind other masculine names on girls that aren't surname or vice versa). Ryan Madeline Cara is a bit much, but I do like each name individually. Ryan Elizabeth Cara might flow better, the rye & line sound just come off as harsh together for me.

You're obviously new to BtN! Pretty much everyone here, safe to say, hates, or, rather, DESPISES boy's names on girls. I like them to an extent (like Mackenzie, McKenna/Makenna, Charley, et cetera), but Ryan, for me, is going too far-- almost to the point of cruelty. Maybe in a different time Ryan will be accepted and acceptable for a girl, but not this year. Ryan is VERY popular for boys right now, and "TrYNNdeE" for girls, so there are many more male Ryans than female Ryans.
I met a 1-year-old girl names Evan last month. And it just didn't fit. I felt stupid calling her Evan. Her Mum, Erin, said 'This is my daughter, Evan", and my Mum goes "Is it a boy? A girl? Her name is Evan?". I was mortified when she said this, as we had only just met these people and were sitting down to lunch to discuss a business deal with them. But, it is understandable. Evan is SO popular for boys these days, that people naturally just assume any child named Evan will be a boy. What's more, it IS a boy's name.
And, bottomline, Ryan is a boys name. Although boys names have been converted to girl in the past (like Courtney, Ashley, et cetera), I think that this one is a little TOO masculine sounding. I saw a birth announcement for a "Ryan Olivia" the other day. It just looked and sounded wrong. That kid is going to grow up with some very trendy names!
So (sorry to rant!), my opinion is that it should not be used as a girl's name. Maybe-- MAYBE-- a girl's middle name, but I would never (suggest) using it a a FN. Sorry to call ya' nieve, but I've learned to keep some of my opinions to myself on these boards, and these are a lot of things I've observed. :)

I agree with Kate
And if you look at the entry for Ryan (click on the link) here at BTN, you will see that the name (probably, according to this site) means "little king".

Thanks, Kelly! It is rare that anyone ever agrees with me. I guess I have diverse opinions-- like I said, I really like Mackenzie (though that means "Son of Ken/Kenneth"). Yeah, I forgot to mention Ryan's meaning. That's also a good point. :)
