Why am I obsessed with names?
Why spend so much time here? Honestly it’s a little weird. What are the psychological factors that make make a person interested in names? I think it’s the love of a thing that can merge linguistics, poetry, history, magic, and sociology together. Some even sprinkle on occasional legends of destiny. It’s like knowing great stories but through panes of privacy glass that won’t reveal every detail until you move around enough to see more. Sussing out the details one at a time, stitching together your own litte mystery story that ends in a micropoem.

Idk, they tickle our brains just right
I heard the story of Rumpelstiltskin when I was very young and was fascinated. What if one day someone might take my baby because I wasn't able to guess their name?? What if one day someone said my name and it upset me so much I'd tear myself apart??I was also told bible stories from a young age, and names are important in them. One of the first things Adam does after being created is start naming animals, and God is interested in what Adam chooses. Then naming God is off limits. Why?? Plus my parents acted like my name meant something about me, or as if it was a way of connecting people. I think I have gotten compared to the person I was named after more than I would have been if I'd been named something else. Kids sometimes got excited if we shared a name. But I spend time here thinking/talking about names because it's entertaining lol. I'm a visual thinker and interested in people. It's for some of the same reasons that other people watch TV or chat about soap operas.

One of the reasons I like learning about names is because they make statements about the cultures they come from. For example, English speakers don't usually name sons after flowers. In Japan, it is more common. Aoi (Althea), Himawari (Sunflower), Renge (Lotus), and Shion (Aster) are unisex.
I first got interested in names as a child. I also had a pet interest in etymology. Later I discovered this site, which fueled my interest in names, and I lurked for a few years until I made an account.
Are you saying we're weirdos?I first got interested in names very young, because I hated my name and wanted a different one. When I found out names had MEANINGS, I was hooked. It was like discovering a secret magic.
I've always been interested in names. I remember asking my elementary school mates their middle names and I still remember some of them. (I'm 65!) To me, names are part history, part sound and rhythm and part images.
For me, lingustics and history were my special interests for as far back as I can remember. I have shown a particular never interest in names until I discovered this website to be specific.
