Sims 3 is definitely the superior game in the playthrough. I'll also make my Arguments for Sims 2. Sims 4 is mostly for aesthetic, which is what I'm going for this game, but it's completely void of any challenges or notable objectives. Hence why there's a bit of a controversy around it.
