Re: any name Ideas for an old-timey, LoTR-type fantasy novel?
in reply to a message by QueenOfTheElfsLOL
I like to collect names that I'd ,mostly never use in a million names IRL but might one day work in fiction/fantasy. Not all of these are Tolkienesque, but all names I think would work in a fantasy setting and all (YMMV) legit names, although a lot are user-submitted names so I can't vouch for that with absolute certainty and it does mean that they come from different real-world cultural backgrounds which might not (again YMMV) mesh seamlessly. Anyway, all the following give me differing levels of fantasy vibes:
Adalrun, Adelais, Aerfen / Aerten, Aesara / Aisara, Ahès, Ailith, Aimend, Alizarin, Amaranth, Amoret, Amphelise, Astraea, Azalais, Betsabea, Bradamante, Branwen, Bryndís, Cadhla, Cécire, Celandine, Cessair, Cinaedion, Clarimond, Clarissant, Coralise, Creirwy, Cyrene, Cytherea, Dalrun, Dubheasa, Dyddanwy, Ealasaid, Eimyrja, Einmyria, Elaia, Elara, Elberen, Elbereth, Eldrun, Elestren, Elisabel, Elzabé, Embeth, Endellion, Estrith, Eyja, Eyrun, Feia, Féthnaid, Fiadhnait, Finna, Galatea, Garance, Gelgéis, Godeleine, Godelieve, Godeliva, Hedra, Hekja, Hekla, Helaia, Helice, Herais, Ilsabeth, Ilsalore, Ingrith, Inmaculada, Isabelline, Isrun, Járnsaxa, Kaetherlin, Kalda, Kerith, Kinvara, Maeleth, Melissanthe, Morwenna, Nephele, Phaedra, Randalín, Sædis, Særós, Særun, Sæunn, Saidhbhín, Seferine, Seirian, Senovara, Sethra, Sibilia, Sigdís, Sighridh, Sigris / Sigrith, Sigurey, Sigurlín, Silvelin, Síofra, Siris, Sirona, Skalmold, Snærós, Sordamor, Tamesis, Tancorix, Tangwystl, Teleri, Tethys, Thoueris, Tigris, Uainín, Uallach, Uathach, Ursuline, Vaia, Valiance, Vedis, Verildis, Vesperine, Walpurgis, Wolfsindis, Ygnesa, Ygraine, Yrsa, Ysabeau, Ysmaine, Yvelise, Zorya, Zybele, Zyrenia
Ailill, Áillun, Aithalion, Alaram, Alaric, Alban, Alcaeus, Aldgrim, Aleister, Alisander, Alphaeus, Alphard, Alured, Amaethon, Ámsvartnir, Andvari, Anthemion, Arawn, Ardalion, Cedalion, Dagfinn, Dvalinn, Eindride, Eltanin, Esdras, Ferran, Ithamar, Ludovic, Salarad, Samandar, Samhradhán, Sámur, Sardion, Sefrian, Sevirian, Sibrand, Sigenand, Sigenoth, Sigtýr, Sindri, Somnus, Sophereth, Svárnir, Syrus, Talos, Theodin, Theron, Thorald, Thráin, Titus, Tydeus, Tylos, Tyrvi, Ulfliútr, Unulf / Unnúlfr, Verald, Vestri, Wolfhelm, Ysbrand, Zelos
I really need to add to by m list, so it's a lot shorter. Also worth looking up some of the names in the database, because some ended up on the list because of a really cool meaning or history more than a pretty look or sound, although I think most of these fit more in the 'fantasy' more than 'modern names I'd use' camp so it's harder to judge what's pretty or not. I also guess you could use these as a starting point or inspiration if you wanted, e.g., Sædis could become Saedith or idk. Whatever fits in your world!
Either way, hope this helped a bit.
