I don't think of signatures so much as how a name looks on the page (eg. typed). I call letters like y, g, p etc... "hanging letters". I prefer a name combo (first, middle & last) to have one hanging letter because I think it looks better written out.

The first combo looks better to me than the second one.
However, if there are too many hanging letters, the combo looks cluttered (example below).

For me, a name combo not only has to sound good (flow well together) but also look good as well.

You could do a whole separate list on "flow" in names regarding typeface!
