Jolene...usable?
My husband asked if I could post here for opinions.
Do you think the name Jolene is usable now-a-days? Would a little girl named Jolene still have to contend with the Dolly Parton connection today?
I think it's a sweet name, but I'd worry that people would sing to her constantly like some of the comments on the name suggest.

I really don't see why you can't use it. It will be older people who will mention the song, not typically her peers. Might she get sung to? Possibly. It's not outside the realm of possibility that she will get sung to by ill-meaning peers, but Dolly Parton is an American national treasure and I think she'd more likely grow to appreciate the name more than that.
Edit: Oh and the newer Miley Cyrus cover? It'll be forgotten about by the time the kid's a teenager. Miley is a famous singer and will be known much more by her other songs by then, and she might not even be relevant. Cyndi Lauper was just before my time, and she feels like she's a part of the generation before me, not my own. It'll likely be the same. If not Miley herself, certainly the cover song.

It's totally usable.
I have a 19 year old cousin named Jolene, and while people sometimes mention the song, she's gotten along just fine. It's usually older people who ask if she was named after the song and not people closer to her age. They don't care.

I like Jolene, regardless of the song.
I do immediately think of the song (I love Dolly Parton) but it don’t see any problems and would even use it myself. I think the Miley Cyrus version is probably more know by the younger generation.
I knew a Julia (Juliet) who kept being asked where Romeo was.

Yeah, that’s precisely why I think Juliet is lowkey unusable even thought it’s stunning.
I like the name, it's pretty and no-nonsense, but the association with the song is still strong, especially because it's still widely covered.
I don't enjoy -ene names in general, and I don't like the song either. So it's a No from me, but that proves precisely nothing.
It’s a cool and beautiful name. I wouldn’t worry at all about the song. Likelihood is, the child would hear the song occasionally, but not in any offensive context. Not worth avoiding the name over.
I think it might be MORE useable nowadays *because* of the song and Dolly Parton's "national treasure" status. The song gives Jolene meaning beyond being just a kinda dorky outdated name.
Obviously the parents of a Jolene should be prepared for the song/Dolly Parton association. It's silly to think Jolene is just like any other name. She probably would get some singing-at. But I don't think it would be constant. There's lots of people out there who don't know about the song or don't care. It's not a bad name.

Double the singing because there's a newer song named Jolene by some band whose name escapes me.
But it's not uncommon right now, probably due to the popularity of the newer song.
A little Layla would probably get sung at even more, and that hasn't stopped it from being extremely popular.

I don’t know a song called Layla, actually.
But Valerie would probably have a similar problem.

you're kidding, right?
You never heard the song "Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes, who is actually Eric Clapton?
It's one of the most iconic rock songs in the world.

I've never heard of it either lmao
But I think its because from the 70s, I'm more into my British glam rock, soul and disco

I didn't think I was familiar with that song either so I checked on YouTube. Well I am familiar with the basic tune in the chorus I was unfamiliar with the whole of the song nor the title, no.
I must admit that I had lived most of my life never hearing that song. Somehow it just never came up, my parents and friends just didn't care about Clapton when I was growing up, I guess. I know it now though. One of my friends actually had Layla picked out for her second kid because of the song, but it turned out to be a boy.

It’s absolutely all about the Dolly Parton song! No escaping that. Joelle is a lovely alternative.
Ikr?
Too associate with the song still. I think Joelle is a better equivalent that has similar vibes.

I think still too associated with the song
I wouldn't. It is not bad in and of itself but imagine getting a song sung at you at least once a week for the rest of your life. The song is iconic, and Beyonce just did a cover of it, so yes, everyone knows the song, and there are no competing popular associations.
I know two Jolenes, one of whom goes by JoJo, and I think it's a lovely name. It does make me think of the song, but I don't see that as a bad thing since it's iconic.
