Re: Rank These Greek Names In Order of Preference
in reply to a message by Rainya
Interesting names!
1) Nefeli - I love it and Nephele as well. It has a soft, naturey vibe, and seems to fit with current trends in terms of sound. I'm surprised it's not more popular on BtN or in 'real' life.
2) Castalia - never heard this before, but I really like it. Castalia is pleasant to say and reminds me of another favorite, Vestalia.
3) Kalliope - really pretty, prefer this spelling to Calliope. Like the NN Kalli/Kallie.
4) Andromeda - I used to like it a lot, but now I find it too sci-fi-ish and frilly. Like the NN Meda, which is growing popular in my country.
5) Jocasta - the 'joke' sound is not my favorite, but I do like that it's mythological without being overly posh and frilly.
6) Menodora - I really want to like this one, but it reminds me of 'menstruation' and related words. The Romanian form Minodora is lovely, though.
7) Melanthe - the sound and meaning feel too melancholic. Cool name for a goth character, though.
8) Hera - it's OK, but I prefer Hero. Hera is a margarine brand where I live, so that's my first association.
9) Orinthia - not a fan, it feels artificial and too posh.
10) Zenobia - I don't get the BtN hype. The sound is really unappealing to me. It reminds me of 'zombie'. I much prefer Zinoviya.
My virtual BtN babies:
👧 Leonie Sylvia
👧 Ngaire Demetria Celeste
👦 Dimitri Andreas & 👧 Helen Marina
👦 Tor Vasileios & 👧 Ambra Loreen
👧 Tessa Katrina Sky

Interesting, what makes you say Nefeli/Nephele fits in with the current trend in terms of sound? Is it because of Persephone and Seraphina?
Yes, and even more popular names of Greek origin such as Penelope, Daphne, or Ophelia. Nephele could also possibly remind people of established names like Natalie or Emily. Probably there aren't any big literary or pop culture associations, so the name is unknown to those who might like it. But I was definitely surprised to see only 15 Nefeli's in the 2023 SSA complete data (Nephele did not rank at all). I expected there would be dozens or even hundreds.
Ah, that makes sense. That is surprising, especially that Nephele didn’t rank at all!
