A very dear friend at uni was known as Scottie or Scotto, his ln being Scott. Now nobody uses it, but I sometimes have to remember - just in time - to call him Ian instead. So that would be my guess, and not an attempt to honour a Scottish terrier. My favourite breed of dog, but there are limits.
