Re: What Do You Think About These Names?

Boys
Gabriel - OK for others: too religious for me, and Gabe is unattractive.
Tobias (Toby) - pleasant, though in my family it's a cat name
Julian - the only male Jul- name I like.
Oliver (Ollie) - still lovely, but too popular.
Sebastian - I believe it's seen as distinguished in most places; where I live, sadly, it isn't at all.
Ambrose - dreadful. To be avoided. Sounds like a brand of flavoured tea.
Edwin (Ned) - Edwin is good; Ned certainly isn't.
Frederick (Freddie) - Frederick is OK, but I far prefer Fred (family full name!) to Freddie.
Alexander (Xander) - starting to fade; Xander should be more interesting than Alex(is), but it's never worked for me. Infantile.
Theodore (Theo) - yes, why not? Not interesting, but harmless.
Girls
Celeste - I've only known one: she hated her name ("So sentimental!") and went by Sally.
Evangeline (Evie) - I'd prefer just Eve, or even Eva. Evangeline is long and complicated, and I knew one who went by Vangie!
Genevieve - never gets the French pronunciation, unfortunately. I much prefer Jennifer.
Marguerite (Margot) - neither: Margaret is definitely preferable.
Charlotte (Lottie) - Lottie is awful, a fat kid in vintage comics, and I've always disliked Charlotte. Rather use Charlene.
Josephine (Posie) - Posie? Yuck! It makes me almost fond of Jo and Jodie.
Madeleine - yes, but only with this spelling. There are too many variants out there.
Rosemary (Romy) - excellent name, ghastly nn.
Millicent (Millie) - I think I prefer Mildred, but it's close. Not really keen on either.
Winifred (Edie) - Edie? Really? I'd be surprised by anything other than Winnie, which I don't like much; fine as a mn, though.
