I've heard of guys with the last name FitzGerald/Fitzanything being called Fitz; one of JFK's grandfathers was Thomas Fitzgerald and was called Honey Fitz for his sweet-talking ways. (I.e., he was kind of oily.) I don't think they make good first names, too pompous and too faux-Irish; faux because real Irish people don't use those names as fns.
