It depends on the names. I generally prefer *ela spellings because they're less awkward than *ella in Spanish. I'd prefer Maya because it seems more established than Mya, despite pronunciation being more ambiguous. I wouldn't use Zoey because it makes Zoe look like Joey for no reason. I don't pronounce Anna and Ana the same. I wouldn't pick Neve over Niamh. Etc.

The ela vs ella thing is understandable, and I agree on Maya and Zoe! I don't say Ana and Anna the same either, what I suppose I mean with the example is a longer or shorter version of the same name, which I get is said differently. I personally prefer Ana :)
Elianna instead of Eliana seems weird; I've never even seen that. Giana instead of Gianna looks weird in the same way.
I feel the same, though the only Eliana/Elianna I've ever met spelled it with two Ns. She may have even spelled it Ellianna.
