Re: Family names/name combos
Christopher Grant is my pick. Or maybe Grant Christopher since that grandfather is still alive. Personally I don't really like Grant as a first name, but clearly the parents do. I like the name Christopher, and I definitely prefer to skip at least one generation with family names. I would veto Nicholas as a first name when his dad is named Nicholas.
If they want to use the dad's name, then I'd pick James Grant (but I'd just call the baby James until he was old enough to decide he liked Grant better or liked both names equally).
Grant Nicholas is okay, but if the baby doesn't like Grant then his main other option would be to have the same name as his dad and that could get confusing unless he had a specific nickname. That could work though, Nicholas has a few options. Nick, Nicky, Nico, or even Cole. Not sure what his dad goes by but I'm sure he could find something different enough. He could also have two middle names. Christopher Grant Nicholas, Grant Christopher Nicholas, Grant Nicholas ChristopherThere are also a lot of names related to Christopher and Nicholas, so they could name the baby after someone who is still alive without them having the exact same name. https://www.behindthename.com/name/christopher/tree & https://www.behindthename.com/name/nicholas/tree
And there are TONS of names related to James https://www.behindthename.com/name/james/tree
