I've never seen it used IRL, except when referencing an American person. I live in a wine-making district and brandy is also produced: cheaper than whiskey, so more popular. Perhaps it's a matter of associations? I wouldn't think if using it as a human name; perhaps on a brown dog it might work. I've never encountered a Sherry either, though there are plenty of Cheryl people of retirement age.
