Common Spellings / Different Spellings
Are there any names where you grew up thinking a spelling was the "normal" spelling because it was the only one you'd ever seen, then you were shocked to find out it's not the most common spelling? If so, did it affect your perception of these names? I ask because I had a lot of these:
Aleah
Alexys
Alysha
Carolyne
Elly
Mikayla
Rianna
Traci
These still affect my perception of names today. I still think Elly is a far superior spelling to Ellie, and Mikayla far superior to literally any other spelling. It also took me a long time to appreciate the Alicia spelling. While Aleah is no longer my favorite spelling, I still do not understand the appeal of Aaliyah; I think it's the worst spelling of all of them, and my brain always pronounces it with a stutter (uh-uh-lee-yah).

Like many have mentioned, I did not realize Michaela was the original spelling and it still doesn't seem like a logical spelling for the pronunciation. I thought it was Makayla.
The first two people I knew with the name spelled their name Carlye. Now I think this makes no sense at all. So many other spellings make more sense. Why would you add a silent e at the end.

OMG, I've never seen that spelling before! That is super strange.
I mean, Selby is kind of a different name.
Thank you for providing the information.
For me it was:
Kaitlyn for Caitlin. I like Caitlin better.
Mikayla for Michaela. I don't have a favorite spelling because they all look weird.
Katherine for Catherine. I think Ks are prettier.
Miya for Maya. I prefer Maya.
Jaiden for Jaden. I prefer Jaiden. I like AIs over As.
Kadence for Cadence. I actually prefer Cadence because I like musical names. If it supposed to be musical, it should retain its spelling.

Oh yeah I met Kaitlyns, Katelyns, and Kaitlins before I ever met a Caitlin.
I've never seen Miya for Maya (I'd also pronounce Miya like Mia) but I think I saw Maia first.
The first bray-den I ever met was a Braiden and I thought that was more common.

I think I saw every variation (Maya, Maia, Mya) at my elementary school, haha. I don't think I had a concept of which was the default spelling.
I think I would've said Katelyn was the original spelling when I was younger.

Huh, I've always pronounced Miya like Mia.
I agree with you on most of these!

Ahaha, I can see why you had these impressions!
I have a cousin named Kristopher, so growing up I thought that was the default spelling.
That's a good spelling!
