I like it! Good associations and historical vibe. I think it sounds... papery? Papery sounds like a bad thing but I mean it in a good way. Maybe feathery is a better word. Something kind of like "lacy" and "frilly" but without actually being either of those things. It's like thin sheets of paper or vellum, or feathers falling through the air.
I like Francis very much as a male name. I don't think it needs a nickname; I've got nothing against Frank, but Francis has so much more to offer that I wouldn't use a nn at all. I quite like Frances as a female name, but every Frances I've known has been known as Fran, which is unappealing.
